Consultation and Technical Assistance

The school nursing and health services consultant has the responsibility for providing leadership in the areas of school nursing practice, school health policy, and school health programs. Technical assistance is available on numerous topics including legal issues in school nursing, school health program planning, implementation and evaluation, education programs and related services for children with special health care needs, school health records, medication administration, and emergency services. This position also provides consultation to colleges and universities, professional organizations, and other child-serving health and education-related organizations and groups regarding preservice preparation, continuing professional development for school health personnel, school nursing, and comprehensive school health programs.

Registration is now open for the 2025 School Nurse Summer Institute! This professional development opportunity is August 5, 2025 in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. This year’s institute topic is “Medicaid Billing for School Nurses - Review of School Based Services and School Nursing Documentation.” Upon completion of this institute participants will be able to:

  • Explain how Medicaid billing brings funding into schools and what services can be billed.
  • Demonstrate how to document “medical necessity” for Medicaid billing.
  • Improve use of Individualized Health Care Plans (IHP) to ensure safety and well-being of students and evaluate outcomes of nursing care.

The link to the 2024-2025 school year School Health Services Survey is now open. The link to the voluntary survey is located on the School Nurse Data Collection webpage along with a template to help you collect and organize your information. The survey will accept data until August 15, 2025.


Back to School Immunization Webinar

The Department of Health Services (DHS) in conjunction with the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) will host a back to school immunization webinar on August 25, 2025 10:30 AM-12:00 PM. The webinar will discuss how schools perform immunization compliance activities and how to complete the public health report.

The webinar will be recorded. The recording will be posted to the DHS School Immunization website. That same website is where schools will find the 2025/2026 school year immunization compliance resources once they are posted. Please check the DHS website in August for updated resources.
