School Nurses support the physical and mental health and educational success of children and youth by providing the link between health and learning. School nurses are leaders in their districts providing both direct care to students and consulting with school administrators to implement school health services and provide emergency nursing services as described in statute.

Consultation and Technical Assistance

The school nursing and health services consultant has the responsibility for providing leadership in the areas of school nursing practice, school health policy, and school health programs. Technical assistance is available on numerous topics including legal issues in school nursing, school health program planning, implementation and evaluation, education programs and related services for children with special health care needs, school health records, medication administration, and emergency services. This position also provides consultation to colleges and universities, professional organizations, and other child-serving health and education-related organizations and groups regarding preservice preparation, continuing professional development for school health personnel, school nursing, and comprehensive school health programs.

School Nurse Summer Institute Registration now open! See agenda and registration on the 2024 School Nurse Summer Institue Event Program. DPI’s School Nurse Summer Institute will be held August 5, 2024 in Madison. The institute will assist school nurses to identify opportunities to incorporate e-cigarette and vaping prevention strategies into their practices and understand the current landscape of opioid use/abuse and the risk to students.

Department of Health Services Immunization Program staff along with the Department of Public Instruction, will be holding a webinar on the Wisconsin Student Immunization Law on Monday, August 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. The webinar will cover the 2024–2025 school year reporting requirements.

The webinar will be recorded and posted on the DHS website.


The 2023-2024 School Health Services Survey is now open. School nurses or designated district staff may submit 2023-2024 data to this voluntary survey until August 15, 2024. The survey with instructions can be accessed on the School Nurse Data Collection webpage.
