Newsletter History, Purpose, and Recipients

Thursday, January 25, 2024

This newsletter is distributed weekly by the Division for Learning Support (DLS) at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). DLS has four teams: Special Education (SE); Student Services/Prevention and Wellness (SSPW); the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (WCBVI); and the Wisconsin Educational Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WESP-DHH).

This newsletter started being distributed via email to Directors of Special Education and Student Services and select other individuals weekly in 2006 to reduce the number of emails being sent directly to Directors of Special Education and Student Services. This also fulfilled DPI’s requirement from U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) to notify local educational agencies (LEAs) about IDEA requirements, guidance documents, resources, and professional development. In 2009, the newsletter was distributed to Council on Special Education members as well. In 2015 distribution was also expanded to institutes of higher education (IHEs).

In 2019, the distribution changed from a weekly email from the DPI Director of the Special Education Team to a division newsletter from the Division for Learning Support. Since then, distribution has expanded even more. We currently have over 1,000 individuals receiving the newsletter. If you know of others who would like to receive the newsletter, please have them email DPILearningSupport@dpi.wi.gov. Newsletter recipients need to work for an LEA, IHE, or other education partner. Vendors do not receive our newsletter. All emails must be a professional email address, not a private email address. Please contact DPILearningSupport@dpi.wi.gov with any questions.
