Welcome to a New Special Education Team Member

Dr. Kel Hughes Jones is joining the Special Education Team as a Racial Equity Consultant and the program administrator for pupil nondiscrimination. She has served as an educator and librarian for over 15 years. She was previously an Education Consultant on the Title I Continuous Improvement (TICI) Team. Prior to coming to DPI, Kel was a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Waukesha County Technical College in Pewaukee, WI. However, the majority of her career was spent teaching science, ESL, and computers at a Title I middle school in a Metro Detroit suburb. Additionally, Kel has championed equity work for 25 years and has led efforts with youth, parents, and educators in schools, districts, and at the county ISD level. She also has equity-based articles published in Educational Leadership magazine. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Oral Roberts University, a Master of Library and Information Science degree from Wayne State University, and an Educational Doctorate degree from the University of Michigan – Dearborn.
